Point tested Stream
Point based Stream of Subclass 189- Skilled-Independent visa
is a point based option for applicants who meet certain criteria regarding age, English language, qualifications, and work experience. This is a permanent visa option. To be eligible for this visa occupation must be on a Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
The applicant requires a skills assessment for this visa (see below). An applicant has to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) with the department and must be invited by the department to lodge the application.
New Zealand Stream
New Zealand Stream of Subclass 189- Skilled-Independent visa allows New Zealand citizens who have held New Zealand Special Category (subclass 444) visa and have lived in Australia for at least the last 5 years to apply for Permanent residency (PR).
Visa applicants must meet minimum taxable income requirements for each of the 4 completed financial years before the visa application unless an exemption applies.
Skilled Nominated (Class SN) Subclass 190 visa

For this visa, the applicant must be nominated by a state or territory government agency. Each state has its own list of occupations that they are prepared to nominate. Mechanical Engineer is an occupation on NSW subclass 190 Priority Skilled Occupation List – 2016-17, as provided on their website. Therefore, if the NSW government is prepared to nominate you, you will be awarded an additional 5 points on the skilled occupation points test.
